Why "structural pruning" instead of trimming?
Structural Pruning
Generally, there are two types of trees; those that can be pruned and those that should instead be removed.
A tree that looks like it is dying - visibly losing leaves (defoliating) in summer, broken and dead branches, undersized leaves, leaf discoloration, tip die-back, a sparse crown - all point to a systemic problem and can seldom be saved. It is advisable not to cut back the crown and large branches because this will lead to more structural and systematic problems, furthering the demise of the tree. This type of tree should likely be removed.
On the other hand, a tree with a single dead or broken branch due to storm damage, sparse or lowlying lower branches, a branch overhanging or lying on a structure, or unsightly limb can be pruned. These cuts are made for safety or aesthetics but are not done to aid the health of a tree.
JE Potteiger Tree Service can help you assess what should be done to your tree. Is it healthy and just in need of some structural pruning to fit your property and how you use it best? Has a storm damaged a limb that should be removed? Or is the tree dying and in need of removal? Call for a free estimate to determine the next steps for your tree project.

Removal that is safe and professional.
Tree Removal
When a tree on your property is dying or dead, has been severely damaged by storm, or has become dangerous, it is time to be removed.
We use various techniques to remove trees depending on the location of the tree, its proximity to structures and wires, available access, terrain, and other obstacles or assets that the client wants to protect. These techniques include felling, climbing, lift, piecing down, rigging, zip-lining and crane removal. We strive to protect our clients property and other trees while completing the removal. Once the tree is down, we clean up the debris to an exemplary degree evening going so far as to fill damage to the lawn caused by the removal. These extra steps can be tedious and time consuming but are worth the additional cost for our clients. When we leave your property, you won't need to clean up after us.
JE Potteiger Tree Service is fully licensened and insured. Call for a free estimate to determine the next steps for your tree project.
I've removed the tree, now what?
Stump Grinding
If your tree must be removed, we generally flush cut it, meaning a low stump remainds. Obviously left over stumps can become an unsightly nusance. We offer stump grinding services to remove the stump quickly instead of waiting years for the stump to decay natrually. Generally stumps are removed up to a foot below the surface; however, the size of the stump will determine how far the grinding can take place. The root system of the tree will still exist but the eyesore will be gone. It is generally not advised to plant a new tree on top of the old stump once it has been removed. A new planting should be off set several feet. We can help you plan and execute any planting projects after the stump is removed.
JE Potteiger Tree Service offers stump grinding as an additonal service paired with tree removal. Call for a free estimate to determine the next steps for your tree removal and stump grinding project!
